Primary Foreign Languages
We believe that learning a foreign language helps our pupils to develop a global outlook on the world in which they live.
Our pupils are encouraged to develop lifelong language learning skills, which they will then be able to use in the future in order to help them learn new languages, or to improve their ability in an existing language.
Primary Foreign Languages is taught in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum at KS2 and there are three main areas of focus for study. These are:
- Oracy (speaking and listening)
- Literacy (reading and writing)
- Intercultural understanding (which is taught throughout the school, including in EYFS)
We have adoped the Language Angels Scheme. Language Angels is a ready-made foreign language teaching solution for all primary schools. The resources have been written around the 12 DfE Languages Programme of Study attainment targets. The three ‘pillars’ of language learning (phonics, grammar and vocabulary) are all built into the scheme and, as pupils progress through the units and teaching types, previous language is recycled, revisited and consolidated.
Our school aims for all pupils to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, specifically Spanish. Learning a second language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them and encourage them to feel an enthusiasm to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2 - ultimately working towards becoming life-long language learners.
We aim for a balance between language learning and cultural understanding within each academic year, ensuring that we rehearse, re-visit and build upon previous language learning as much as possible. In weekly lessons, new vocabulary is taught through speaking and listening activities initially, then once secure, writing activities are introduced to practice the written language. Through our weekly lessons, our aim is that pupils will be able and confident enough to understand and communicate ideas, facts, feelings and opinions in both speech and writing, with the main focus being on practical communication.
