At John Harrox Primary School, we believe that high quality, structured music lessons will inspire children to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self- confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We do this using the Music Express scheme.

Children participate in a range of musical activities throughout their time at our school which helps them to thrive within our Creative Outlook. They are encouraged to sing, compose, listen and appraise music and perform. They use voices and instruments in order to develop their creative skills. Through active listening, children’s awareness and understanding of the wider history of music and musical genres is developed. 

The children learn to sing solo and in ensemble with increasing confidence throughout their time at school.  We do this through our various school concerts and year group plays. Additionally, singing is promoted through our school choir and assemblies.  Our pupils develop their knowledge of the various dimensions of music and use this to play a variety of different tuned and untuned instruments.  As their skills develop, children learn to respond to a variety of different stimuli and express their own feelings by creating compositions for performance through technology, and peer ensemble. All children within year 3 and 4 have the opportunity to learn a tuned instrument such as the ukulele or violin through whole class music tuition delivered by the Lincolnshire Music Service. Children are also invited to learn a tuned instrument, including piano, violin or guitar.

Through our extra-curricular provision, we provide pupils with the opportunity to learn to play a recorder, attend percussion club, to sing in a choir and to have individual instrumental lessons. Parents are provided with information regarding instrumental tuition for which a payment is required. The Lincolnshire Music Hub provides our music tutors.
